NORTH CAROLINA

On November 5, 2024, North Carolina voters cast more than 5.7 million ballots — about 74 % of registered voters.
In the state’s highest-profile races, Democrat Josh Stein won the governorship, defeating Republican Mark Robinson, while Republican Donald Trump carried the state’s 16 electoral votes in the presidential race.
Meanwhile, Democrat Jeff Jackson won the Attorney General’s office, and incumbent Democrat Allison Riggs narrowly kept her seat on the state Supreme Court — by just 734 votes — after a prolonged legal challenge over absentee ballots. In legislative races, Republicans remained in control of the state House, but Democrats gained at least one seat, breaking the GOP’s super-majority there. In U.S. House races, Republicans expanded their delegation, winning 10 of North Carolina’s 14 seats.

Overall, 2024 was a mixed outcome — a partisan split between statewide offices and federal representation — and set the stage for continued political tension in the state, especially given the narrow margins and legal scrutiny surrounding several contests.
